This year for Humanities I have Mrs.Nicodemus tacher I had last year. We are currently reading a book called "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien on the Vietnam war. I am currently failing her class but what I am doing to improve my grade is going to tutoring after school and asking for help more rather then just not doing it because I don't know how.
"Avoiding the Draft" In the discussion of The Things They Carried by Tim O’brien, one controversial issue has been whether james Fallows or Tim O’briens method to avoid the draft was more honorable than ones. On the one hand James Fallows argues that his method of being physically unfit for the war was the most honorable, however on the other hand Tim O’brien contends that his method of fleeing to Canada was most honorable. My own view is that James Fallows method was most honorable.
Although Tim O’briens method wasn't as smart or honorable he had very good reasoning in why fleeing to canada he felt like was his only option n getting away from being drafted into the war. He mentioned in the book “I was drafted in a war i hated”, and “It was my view then, and still is, that you don't make a war without knowing why” which basically explains why he did not want to fight in the warso thought of fleeing. But then again going to canada meant leaving his family, his hometown for the rest of his life and risking to never see his family again and losing everything he knows.
On the other hand, James Fallows method was most honorable. His method was to intentionally drop to an unhealthy weight (he was 6’1 and only 120 pounds) In order to be deemed physically unfit for the war. It was most honorable because he risked his life and most important food. He would have also been able to gain the weight back.
